The Best Social Media Job Application EVER: How 22 Year-Old Lindsay Blackwell Applied for a $110K Job

Excellent news story. Stories like these inspire me to think of creative ideas and push the standards.

The Story

Late last year, I saw an opening on LinkedIn for the first Social Media Director at the University of Michigan. As my wife was originally from Michigan, I submitted a 10-page application with a two-page resume, cover letter, professional biography, and a 30-60-90 day business plan. I even placed Facebook and Google ads aimed at Communications Department staff at The University, which my wife said was complete overkill. Only last week did I hear back that the position had been filled – I never got called for an interview, and I found out why: because I was up against the likes of Lindsay Blackwell.

Last month, I was searching to see if the position had been filled and came upon http://www.dearlisarudgers.com/ – a website conceived, developed, and designed by Lindsay Blackwell and directed solely at Lisa Rudgers, the Vice President for Global Communications and Strategic Initiatives at University…

How to find free stuff online

I love free stuff. Who doesn’t?

Here’s my top 5 favorite places/promotions to find great free stuff online. Will continue to edit this post if I find any free stuff!

  1. Reddit – /r/freebies: This reddit community is a great place to find excellent items online. Some of my past collections included and countless Redbox movies. *Promotion code* only. Start here
  2. Google Play. You’ll find that sometimes Google will provide you with free music, videos, and books.
  3. Craigslist Free section – Craigslist is a great platform for others in your local community to give away their hand-me-down or swap
  4. Learn Programming – Let’s face it. Programming and computers are not going anywhere in the foreseeable future, why not learn something about computers and possibly make money while doing it? http://learncodethehardway.org/
  5. Spotify – Free 1-month subscription to Spotify Premium ($9.99 value) Text SPOTIFY to 777483 and it will text you the code back. You can then go to this page[1] to redeem the code. It looks like this is part of some promo thing from Sprite. I currently have a Premium account that was going to end in a few days, but my account was credited with another month after putting in the code. Woo!

Photographer sets up craigslist sting to get stolen DSLR back

Craiglist thief steals camera, owner fights back

It’s amazing what the internet can do in terms of being interconnected with real-world drama. In 2013, nearly everyone is dependent on the web to help us solve problems and gather necessary information.

One particular new story that caught my attention was a recent case when a Redditor posted a topic on the “Photography” subreddit about his camera that was stolen.

Right from the  beginning, he was in instant stealth mode in finding his camera. He searched craigslist, Facebook, and even emailed his suspect all while using an incognito. Very smart move.

A couple of comments, that I found on reddit that were interesting, hilarious, and useful for anyone who has any valuable item stolen from them:

“Do you have your receipt, warranty card, any documentation to prove it’s your camera? If so arrange to purchase the camera at a very public place. Bring all of those documents to the meeting place, but leave them in your car. When the thief hands you your camera hold on to it securely and tell them this is your camera and you’re going to call the police. I’d make sure to have a friend or two close by as well. — Don’t puss out, get your gear back!”

Coffee Shop

“In my experience police are too apathetic, and slow to actually act on this, so if you want that camera back, you’re going to have to act on it alone.

The police have bigger fish to fry.

Manufacturers of expensive portable items really should put some effort into making their products easier to trace (by the legitimate owners), making them less appealing to steal.

“Tell the guy you want to buy it, for full price. Ask to meet in a public place like a coffee shop or something, where the employees have a vested interest in keeping the violence down. Bring friends. Ask to check it out, check the serial number, if it’s yours, don’t hand it back. Step away from him before you announce your intentions, get your friends to get between him and you if you can. Worst case scenario, if he pulls a weapon, hand it back. If he has any brain about him, he won’t attack you if he’s getting what he wants, because assault makes it even worse. You’re most likely safe if it’s in public in the middle of the day. Remind him you have his personal information.
Finding your property right after it is stolen is key to putting all the pieces of the puzzle together.

If you wait too long, he’s going to sell it to some one else, and it will be gone forever, as well as any evidence of a crime. Once you get it back, point the person out to the police, and hopefully they’ll get around to talking to the guy.”

How To Not Care What People Think

Hello everyone!

My name is Darrel Adams and I’m a young adult living in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I thought I’d start a blog about interesting topics and my thoughts on business, news, and technology. But before I start to blog about the world around me, I’d thought I will share my thoughts on how to not care about what other people think of you.

  • People don’t care what you do as long it doesn’t effect them.

One of greatest parts about being a young adult is that you get to experience life through a different role. You are not a child, so why should you be treated like one?! You basically have to do everything other adults do such as cooking, shopping for groceries, pay bills, get an education etc.

Stress

  • Learn to relax with not knowing what other people think of you

Why let others get in the way? It’s OKAY to be a little bit selfish and not care about others. Once you realize this powerful mindset, it will free your mind of worry, stress, and insecurities.

  • You won’t hurt that other person’s feelings if you say “No”.

Life doesn’t have to be submissive to others. Stand up for yourself! Think before you agree to promises and stay focused on yourself because ultimately you are the only one who is looking out for you.

  • Lastly, STOP thinking so damn much.

Does it matter if a girl thinks you that you’re “ugly”? Who Cares!

Do this self-hypnotic exercise:

  • Step 1: Think about times when you are tempted to worry what others think about you.
  • Step 2: Now think of times when you are totally focussed – maybe on a sports game or piece of music or reading a book, or talking with a friend when they’re telling you something amazing. Now notice that feeling of being totally focussed outside of yourself.
  • Step 3: Amplify that feeling.
  • Step 4: Take that feeling of outer focus into the imagined situation from Step 1 (where before you’d have been worrying about what others might be thinking).
  • Step 5: Experience being in the formally self-conscious situation and feeling relaxed and unconcerned about what others may or may not be thinking.
  • Step 6: Notice what it’s like to reach the point where you no longer even think about what others might be thinking.
